The apartment is a large 1920s flat (190 square meter), right next to the Gulbenkian Foundation, with its marvelous landscaped gardens, notable art collections of the Gulbenkian Museum and the famous Center of Modern Art, and classical music concerts.
The place is ideal for tourists, but because of all the small business and universities nearby it is also an interesting place to stay for professional visitors and academics. Please check our weekly and monthly discounts. We pass invoices/receipts. Gulbenkian Park Residence is officially registered for short term lets (24936/AL) by Turismo de Portugal, IP.
The Neighborhood
Originally built at the turn of the XIXth to the XXth Century, the Avenidas Novas (New Avenues) neighborhood has become increasingly fashionable in the past few years. It has recently been refurbished, the sidewalks of the bright avenues have been widened, licenses for outside tables been passed to pastries and restaurants, so it is an enjoyable and well frequented hang-out and meeting place for both Alfacinhas (locals) and visitors. Probably the most central and concentrated business district of Lisbon, it is full of shops, cafés and restaurants and you find all imaginable services by just walking around the block. Next door from the apartment building there is a traditional café, very popular for small breakfast and lunch. Walking 50 meters up the street you find a little grocery store and a chocolate shop. One of Lisbon’s most beautiful pastries, Café Versailles, is in the neighborhood, as well as some of Lisbon’s best dinner places, including Gourmet-level restaurants such as Michelin-starred Eleven, at top of Parque Eduardo VII and the famous Talho in Rua Carlos Testa, the Panorama Restaurant in the Sheraton Hotel, Lisbon’s highest building offering a spectacular birds view over the city, and many more affordable yet excellent restaurants, traditional, exotic or fusion, and vegetarian, all within a five minutes walking radius.
It is a great shopping area, with many specialized and designer shops. In three minutes you walk to the fancy Corte Inglés department store with Lisbon’s best quality supermarket, and some other shopping malls are quite close, including Lisbon’s former Bull fighting arena in Campo Pequeno.
You have large cinemas in Corte Inglés, Saldanha and Campo Pequeno, but also the alternative cinema Nimas in Av. 5 de Outubro 42.
There are regular concerts in the Gulbenkian Foundation and all sorts of festivals, concerts and events in the Culturgest center, about 10 min walk.
Getting around
In terms of getting around this is probably the most efficient place to stay. You have direct Metro connection to the airport (150m to the metro entrance). The Metro also brings you in 10 minutes to the older parts with the biggest tourist concentration, such as Baixa, Chiado and Bairro Alto (5 stops) or Alfama (7 stops). In 8 minutes you walk to the 161 Bus that takes you every half an hour directly to Lisbon’s biggest and most popular beach in Costa Caparica, stretching out 12 km down the Atlantic coast. This bus crosses the river Tejo 70m above sea level on the 25 de Abril bridge, and on the way back you get the must see-view of the Lisbon river-front.
If you have a car, there is paid parking everywhere (free at night after 7pm and on weekends) and if there is no space in front of the building or in the nearby streets, there are always available spots (but also paid) in the underground garage 50 m from the apartment.
